Seeing pictures of Indiana University during world war 1. I’m struck that the state could conscript people to go do things they would not usually do – fight and kill. I considered, but did not have to face the decision of what to do if drafted. The draft ended 2 years before I was of age. I had to register, but not worry about leaving or staying. My brother was in the lottery one year, but had a high number. No one in my lifetime since then has had to make decisions about war when it involved someone being taken away against their will.

I had already decided I would leave rather than fight.
